NHS Wales agency staff costs spiral to cover vacancies

22 January 2019 – BBC News

A financial watchdog has revealed that spending on agency staff to cover NHS vacancies has gone up quite a bit over the last few years in Wales.

Auditor General, Adrian Crompton, said that spending on agency staff had risen 171% over seven years, peaking at £164.4m in 2016-17 and subsequently called for strong leadership to manage the situation.

Health boards like Hywel Dda are currently facing financial problems, underpinned by vacancies.
